Heating and combustion

Heating systems include boilers, ovens or heat pumps. Their function is to
heat water, steam or air centrally, in a domestic room or in the technical room
of a large building. These installations also integrate the heat distribution
system, whether it is a water circuit or a ventilated air system.

In order to ensure that such a heating system operates safely and efficiently,
various checks, adjustments and measurements must be carried out on heat
pumps, gas boilers, and any oil and solid fuel systems. These checks are
necessary when an installation is commissioned, but also at regular intervals
throughout its life cycle.

The control operations are diverse: combustion gas analysis, differential
pressure measurement, leak detection and leak testing, measurement of
outlet temperature and ambient CO. Also note that combustion analysis is
equally important for engines and other combustion processes whose
purpose is not to generate heat. It is necessary to measure their gas
emissions for regulatory compliance and performance evaluation reasons.

COMBUSTION
ANALYSIS

Combustion equipment such as boilers, ovens or
internal combustion engines must be rigorously
controlled with regard to environmental and
energy regulations. They must also guarantee a
perfectly optimized and efficient combustion
process over time in order to consume less fuel.

With professional combustion analyzers from
Sauermann, flue gas analysis makes combustion
processes more efficient and reduces emissions
by optimizing the reaction and combustion
processes.

The combustion gases emitted during
combustion contain in particular O2, CO2, CO,
NOx (nitrogen oxides), other polluting gases and
soot particles. Some of these gases pollute the
environment, others also have a negative effect
on the climate and create numerous health risks.

MAINTENANCE
OF HEAT PUMPS

Heat pumps produce heat without any
combustion process, with better energy efficiency
than condensing boilers. The heating process is
based on a refrigerant gas which transports heat
along a closed circuit. Most of these refrigerant
gases present environmental risks and are
expensive. This is why it is necessary that these
heat pump systems be properly started and
maintained.

Heat pumps require thorough and regular
monitoring to maintain optimal efficiency, reduce
the risk of refrigerant gas loss, and ensure
reliable and long-lasting operation. The
maintenance and upkeep of these installations is
an important activity in the HVACR market.

Generally, annual maintenance is recommended
for all heat pumps. It ensures efficient operation,
detects possible refrigerant gas leaks and
optimizes efficiency to reduce energy costs.

CHECKING
DIFFERENTIAL
PRESSURE

When carrying out maintenance work on domestic
heating systems, measuring the differential
pressure is one of the mandatory measurements
to be carried out. This includes :

Measuring gas pressure and static pressure of a
boiler
Draft Measurement: Measuring the pressure in
the combustion chamber or chimney/flue to
ensure that combustion gases are exiting the
combustion equipment properly and safely.

Measuring gas flow and static gas pressure in the
system is particularly important, because the
burner can only operate properly within a
specified flow pressure range. Outside of this
range, explosive flame formation may occur. The
consequences are malfunctions or even
breakdown of the heating system. For this
reason, acquiring a reliable and easy-to-use
differential pressure measuring instrument is
essential.

CHECKING
THE TEMPERATURE

For a heating system to operate efficiently and
distribute heat as evenly as possible, measuring
temperature is crucial. At Sauermann you will find
instruments for directly measuring the
temperature on heating equipment or in the
ambient air of a room.

LEAK TESTING
AND GAS LEAK
DETECTION

Heat pumps and combustion heating systems can
suffer seriously from refrigerant and combustible
gas leaks. Most refrigerants are potent
greenhouse gases and can seriously harm the
environment, while leaking combustible gases
pose serious safety concerns (explosion hazards)
and waste fuel. It is therefore essential to be able
to easily locate any leak in order to quickly repair
or replace the segment of the gas circuit
concerned.

Searching for and finding gas leaks can be very
difficult. Fast professional leak sniffers are
essential for precisely and quickly locating the
slightest leaks in a gas circuit.
